One of the hallmarks of Alzheimer disease pathology is the presence of amyloid plaques in the brain, but their function has generally been poorly understood. Now, new evidence suggests that these plaques may trap lithium, leading to lower lithium levels in memory-related brain regions. In Alzheimer’s mouse models, low-dose lithium orotate reduced Alzheimer pathology and improved memory.
