Overview

Menopause affects every woman, yet comprehensive education in menopause care has historically been limited across medical training. As a result, physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants across specialties are increasingly called upon to address complex questions about perimenopause, menopause, hormone therapy, and sexual health.

WHAM was designed to help close that knowledge gap. This State-of-the Art “Mini Fellowship” curriculum takes a whole-woman approach to midlife and menopause, connecting hormonal changes across the body with their impact on symptoms, treatment, long-term health, and longevity. Topics span hormone and testosterone therapy; sexual, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, mental and brain health; lifestyle medicine, integrative medicine, and the complexities of caring for women at risk for or living with breast cancer.

WHAM goes beyond the basics to address the questions clinicians encounter in their real-world practice, including emerging evidence, areas of ongoing debate, and controversial and off-label approaches. Faculty help participants critically evaluate the evidence, navigate patient questions, and make informed, individualized treatment decisions.

Whether menopause care is a primary focus of your work or one part of the patients you care for, WHAM provides the knowledge and clinical strategies to deliver more confident, comprehensive care.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize hormone changes across a woman’s lifespan and their clinical implications.
  • Apply clinical reasoning and problem-solving strategies to the evaluation and management of menopausal symptoms and midlife health.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of perimenopause and its management.
  • Design individualized treatment plans using estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone when clinically indicated.
  • Evaluate the safety, risks, benefits, and appropriate use of menopausal hormone therapy, including considerations related to timing of initiation.
  • Identify evidence-based non-hormone options for managing menopausal symptoms.
  • Apply lifestyle medicine principles, including nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and weight management, to support health and address obesity during menopause.
  • Assess the scientific evidence supporting integrative medicine approaches in the care of menopausal women.
  • Evaluate and manage women’s sexual health concerns using evidence-based approaches, including hormonal therapies, pelvic physical therapy, and counseling.
  • Address the unique considerations of menopause care in women with cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, dermatologic, gastrointestinal, metabolic, neuropsychiatric, and oncologic conditions.
